ANC councillors refuse to step down

Two Eastern Cape ANC councillors implicated in the manipulation of candidates’ lists are refusing to resign even though their political bosses have ordered them to do so.

The report   by ANC heavyweight Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma that names them, details how some ANC leaders doctored the party’s candidates’ list before the 2011 local government elections, implicating several ANC members, including King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) councillor Bongiwe Momoza and Nyandeni municipal councillor Nothemba Gonyela.

ANC’s OR Tambo regional deputy secretary Lawrence Mambila confirmed yesterday that the regional leadership had instructed Momoza and others to resign.

“We gave an instruction to the affected councillors that they must vacate office. We are told  these councillors  do not want to listen to the organisation.

“If they fail to comply, it will lead to a situation where they will face the disciplinary processes of the organisation,”  Mambila said.

The Daily Dispatch has seen a letter from the OR Tambo regional secretary Lulama Ngcukayithobi addressed to Momoza, instructing her to resign.

In the letter Ngcukayithobi wrote on May 5, he said: “The ANC having exhausted all the ANC internal processes following the release of the ANC NEC decision of the 2011 list processes has come to a conclusion that you must be directed to resign as an ANC representative in the council of the KSD  Municipality within 14 days from the date you receive this correspondence.

“You are therefore expected to submit a letter of resignation to the ANC chief whip copied to the ANC regional secretary.

“With full understanding that you have been following all the ANC processes, in respect of this matter, it is safe to expect that you will heed the directive from your organisation and do as instructed.”

KSD council chief whip Zanemvula Gusana said Momoza has yet to submit her resignation letter.

“The regional secretary informed us that she is supposed to submit a letter.

“When I  did a follow-up  in July, she said she was bereaved. Since then I have not spoken to her about the resignation. I am going to do another  follow-up and speak to the regional secretary for further advice,”  Gusana said.

Gonyela said she was aware that there were attempts to remove her, but denied ever receiving a letter from the ANC’s regional office instructing her to resign.

“I am waiting for a letter saying I must resign. I have not received any letter from my leaders. If my leaders give me a letter saying I must resign, I will do so,”  Gonyela said.
