ANC provincial bosses in Calata House are considering bringing in new faces to reinforce the task team President Jacob Zuma handpicked to help change the fortunes of the party in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
The announcement comes after the Phumulo Masualle-led provincial working committee (PWC) spent two days in the region trying to assess the effectiveness of the 30-member task team, assigned to take over from the disbanded regional executive committee last December.
The Daily Dispatch can reveal today that of the 30 people appointed – including three members from the ANC’s second highest decision-making body, the national executive committee – more than half were unable to get involved to fix divisions between the metro’s branches.
ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane confirmed yesterday that 14 of the 30 members “have been consistently doing the work” of the task team.
Mabuyane said the remaining 16 had been unable to assist – some were from Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng where they faced similar challenges.
“So in essence them being part of the task team was a non-starter right from the beginning,” he said.
“We are closely looking into the matter, and considering roping in comrades with enough energy to complement what is happening administratively within that municipality.”
A few months after ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe announced the Charles Nqakula-led task team, seasoned soccer administrator Danny Jordaan was appointed the metro’s new mayor.
Mabuyane said Jordaan had brought in new energy and the changes were starting to bear fruit.
“But that has to be complemented with strong political leadership.
“So we have to rope in new faces and inject new energy in the task team to assist the comrades who are doing their best to change things for the better in Nelson Mandela.”
The task team was given at least six months to fix the divisions in the metro so the region could hold its elective conference.
But Mabuyane said the party was now likely to extend the team’s stay in the region.
In order to inject new energy into the team, the PWC has roped in newly elected metro chief whip Lutho Suka, a former ANC member of parliament, as head of elections.
“We hope comrade Suka’s appointment as head of elections will also inject the much needed energy,” added Mabuyane.
