ANC probes youth league fiasco

NEC looks in as two provinces fail to convene.

THE ANC Youth League in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal have failed to hold elective conferences as planned.

Now the league’s mother body, the ANC, has assigned deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte, along with national working committee (NEC) members, to investigate the delays.

At the centre of the divisions is who should replace expelled national ANCYL president Julius Malema when the youth structure goes to vote later this year.

There are three candidates: NTT coordinator Magasela Mzobe, former treasurer Pule Mabe and former deputy Ronald Lamola.

Mabe has been endorsed by Gauteng. In the Eastern Cape, BCM and Alfred Nzo endorsed Mzobe while the nullified OR Tambo conference endorsed Mabe.

The Eastern Cape is further divided by who should lead the province between three lineups – Ncedo Kumbaca, Siyabonga Mdodi and Nathi Ngqoko. Alfred Nzo has voted in favour of Ngqoko and BCM wants Mdodi, while OR Tambo, Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman want Kumbaca.

Mabuyane said that at the meeting with Duarte on Sunday, it was agreed that the NEC should form an “independent” task team comprising NEC and PEC members to look into BCM and OR Tambo appeals.

It was also agreed that both Mabuyane and former YL leader Mlibo Qoboshiyane be excluded from the team.

“People feel strongly that our presence in these disputes may not be objective as we used to serve in the ANCYL PEC,” said Mabuyane.

“We agree with that because all we want to see is a united ANCYL, which will be able to convene a successful elective conference so that it can take its delegates to the national conference .”

The team is due to return to the province to listen to the complains from the affected region.

“Once that’s done and finalised, we hope the outstanding branches will be audited so that the provincial conference can be convened in two week’s time,” Mabuyane added.
