Angry protesters burn tyres on N2

Mdantsane police spent much of their Heritage Day yesterday putting out fires started by angry residents in two informal settlements in NU 9.

About 150 residents from Thembelihle and Manyano informal settlements were protesting over the lack of housing and jobs they said were promised as far back as 2010.

“Residents are now asking why the area is being developed before theirs but in actual fact the same protesting residents are to blame for the lack of development in their area,” said Mankahlana. She said the development in the troubled informal settlement was delayed when residents could not decide on the type of structures they wanted built.

“Some want brick and mortar houses, while others want alternative technology houses,” she said. Mankahlana said the provincial department of human settlements had already approved the construction of 821 houses for residents in the two informal settlements.

The Madikizela project was spearheaded by the Buffalo City Metro, she said. “We are meeting with the contractor next Monday, houses are going to be built for these communities.”

Sub-committee member Funeka Thwashu said the residents also wanted employment opportunities when the houses were being built.

Mzuku said the arrested suspects had been charged with acts of public violence and would appear in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court soon. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
