Armed robbers hit EL jewellery store

Jewellery worth more than R200000 was taken during a robbery at the American Swiss store in East London, Oxford Street this morning.

This is the third robbery in a Jewellery store around the city in the past seven days.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said two men entered the store armed with handguns at approximately 9.05am when employees were preparing for business of the day.

"The suspects forced two employees at the storage room where they tied them up before stealing the Jewellery," Tana said.

In addition the suspects had also opened the till and took more than R2000 in cash before fleeing the scene.

The robbery follows two similar ones in Browns Jewellery at Hemingways last Sunday where Jewellery more than R300000 was stolen. On Wednesday  another robbery at Sterns Jewellery in Gilwell Mall near the CBD saw Jewellery more than R300000 taken.

Tana ruled out the possibility of a syndicate saying their investigation was on going.

There has been no suspects arrested in either of the three robberies.

Police were investigating a case of business robbery and anyone with information on this morning's robbery is urged to call East London police detectives on 043-7070600.
