East Londoners were due for a brief taste of Aussie: The Australian Circus earlier in the year, but the organisers, Weber Bros Entertainment, did not feel that a one-week stop would be enough.

The all-human cirque extravaganza is now setting up at the Old Selbornian Club in East London for the duration of the upcoming school holidays – from tomorrow until July 17.

The extensions have become a common occurrence, with sell-out shows far exceeding the expectations of the organisers in Durban and Sandton.

Executive producer Sebastian Cassie explained: “When planning our original tour run in partnership with Sun International, we originally only included East London as a three-day stopover and we were unwilling to take a risk on extending show seasons beyond two weeks in length given the state of the economy.

“Upon arrival, we received an extremely warm reception and we could not be more pleased to announce that we have extended our whole tour of South Africa, which will include a four-week stay in East London.”

The animal-free show blends cirque artistry and acrobatics on the ground and in the air with hilarious slapstick comedy, illusion and extreme stunts including FMX jumps beneath the Big Top circus tent, the splitting Globe of Death (a spherical cage in which four riders encircle each other and perform precarious tricks) and one of the world’s only human cannonball acts.

Aussie marked its international debut at the GrandWest Grand Arena in Cape Town, performing to thousands over a limited weekend run of shows.

The show has since touched down all over the country, stopping at Port Elizabeth, Durban, Pretoria, Sandton, Carnival City and Bloemfontein.

“We found that it is the regional and coastal cities who are really hungry for spectacle, and they sadly often miss out,” Cassie said.

“It is also motor cities like East London where we find people are most enthusiastic about the high-octane parts of the show – in particular the freestyle motocross stunts that are our speciality.”

Tickets are R200 to R400 for adults and R150 to R350 for children under 14 years old and groups of 10 or more booking together. Infants seated on a parent’s lap do not require a ticket.

Tickets can be purchased at Computicket, Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper and House&Home. — DDR
