Betusile in line for top national gospel award

Gospel artist Betusile Mcinga finally received national recognition after years of making music, when he received his first Crown Gospel Music award nomination.

Mcinga, the son of award-winning gospel singer Lusanda, started his solo career in 2008. Since going on his own, Mcinga has released three albums but had not been nominated for any awards.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday before leaving for Cape Town, the 29-year-old said he felt honoured to receive his first gospel nomination.

“I cannot take credit for this, not even my producer can do that. This is all God. I’ve been singing for years and this shows that God’s timing is always perfect,” he said.

His nomination is in the best newcomer category, alongside East London band Chosen.

Mcinga’s popular song Zundithwale has also received a nomination for song of the year, alongside gospel giant Hlengiwe Mhlaba.

The Mthatha singer said even though the awards ceremony had not yet taken place, he already felt like a winner.

“Being nominated in the song of the year category is a big deal.”

Mcinga said he had always wanted to go solo even when he was still a backing vocalist for the Lusanda Spiritual Group.

“I had recorded my demos and was in the process of getting a label, when a listener called on Umhlobo Wenene FM saying that my mom should let me do my own solo album.

“We took that as a confirmation for something we had been thinking about,” he said.

Although he has gone out on his own, Mcinga still performs with his mother on some songs.

Other Eastern Cape nominees for the Crown Gospel Music Awards include King William’s Town comic TD Jokes for the best comedian award; Vovee Batala for best gospel rap; Dumi Mkokstad for best gospel artist; Khanyisa Sabuka for best classic gospel; and Veliswa Skeyi for best traditional gospel.

Local band Chosen has been nominated in the best newcomer and best pop gospel categories and their producer Vaughan Fourie has been nominated for the best gospel producer. Award-winning singer Loyiso Bala’s latest album Power Love Sound, has been nominated for the best gospel DVD and the best pop gospel album.

Categories that will be voted for by the public include best gospel artist, song, group (AmaZion), gospel Maskandi’, radio show, community radio show and TV show.

The rest will be voted for by the judges. To vote for Mcinga, SMS ‘song zundithwale’ to 34069. SMSes cost R1.50.

The awards ceremony will be held on November 23 at the Durban ICC. —poliswap@dispatch.co.za
