Bursaries worth millions up for grabs for matrics

Needy students to benefit from Bhisho, ELIDZ aid.

WITH the final matric results finally known, the Eastern Cape government has announced bursaries worth millions of rands for needy pupils.

Provincial government spokesman Mxolisi Spondo revealed yesterday that the East London Industrial Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ), premier’s office, and departments of local government and traditional affairs, rural development and agrarian reform, social development, roads and public works and transport were all offering a number of bursaries.

Since 2009, local government has invested R3.25-million in bursaries for youths from disadvantaged families.

“Annually we budget R650 000 for bursaries,” said local government spokesman Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha.

The ELIDZ this week launched a bursary for disadvantaged youth worth just over R1-million.

“The scheme will see young matriculants between 18 and 25 being offered an opportunity to study at a South African university of their choice for a three-year under-graduate qualification in mathematics, science or technology-related fields,” ELIDZ spokeswoman Ayanda Ramncwana said.

Ramncwana said the scheme would be rolled out over the next three years and was part of the ELIDZ’s objectives to encourage further study in the identified fields.

She said the aim was to build on scarce qualifications.

ELIDZ CEO Simphiwe Kondlo said the scheme would only consider disadvantaged applicants from surrounding townships and villages and would focus on financial assistance to disadvantaged pupils with an average of 60% or more in their matric results.

“The reality is that our province needs to have a diverse, well informed, adequately skilled and innovative knowledge base in order for developments such as the IDZ to thrive, and this is one initiative that is aimed at building that base.

Ramncwana said the ELIDZ has partnered with the Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Skills Development Foundation to ensure a smooth implementation of the bursary scheme.

Forms are available from the ELIDZ offices in East London as well as the MST Skills Development Foundation Offices in East London.

The forms can also be downloaded from the www.elidz.co.za or www.mstskillsfoundation.co.za websites.

For government department bursaries, students can contact bursary officers of government departments in Bhisho and King William’s Town. —
