CCTV cameras for Leaches Bay by December

Buffalo City Metro hopes to have CCTV cameras operating in the Leaches Bay area by December.

A well-known church minister was stabbed to death in the area last week.

BCM spokesman Keith Ngesi yesterday said: “A more permanent solution is the installation of CCTV surveillance, for which funding has been made available and should be operational by December 2016.”

Ngesi said the area was being patrolled by law enforcement officers between the West Bank Golf Course and Hickmans River Mouth.

Two men who stabbed St Georges Presbyterian Church  Reverend Clifford Leeuw, 60, in the neck and arm made off with his cellphone and cash last Tuesday afternoon.

The pastor attempted to drive himself to safety in Cove Rock where he told a passerby what had happened before falling unconscious and dying.

He will be laid to rest today.

In August last year police blamed sex workers for the spate of attacks on people and motorists visiting the area.

They warned sex workers that if they were found to be working with criminals they would be charged.

Nine people including three police officers were robbed and stabbed in the area between July and August last year.

Leaches Bay resident Tokkie Minnie welcomed the metro’s announcement.

“We definitely need something like that as it would serve as a deterrent for crime,” Minnie said. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
