Aspiring musicians will get a chance to compete for a record deal and R20000 when the Eastern Cape Music Talent Search kicks off in Port Elizabeth tomorrow.

The talent search, organised by the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC), will hold auditions in all seven districts of the Eastern Cape.

ECAVC director Sy Ntuli said the search was aimed at identifying new talent who would be groomed and recorded for the world market.

The first audition will be held tomorrow in Port Elizabeth at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s South Campus.

Ntuli said the overall winner of the competition would walk away with a recording deal and R20000 in cash. The top 10 will get a chance to record their own songs, which will be played on local radio stations.

Ntuli said judges included Mio Khondleka, former programme manager at Algoa FM, and Umhlobo Wenene FM’s music compiler, Gwiba Nkonki.

He said the judges would select between three to five contestants from each district. “They will then qualify to go to a three-week camp in East London from June 22 to July 12.”

The artists will take part in workshops and training at the camp, and in the last two weeks will compete to stay in the competition – which will be televised on Bay TV.

“The community and radio stations will also get a chance to participate by voting for their favourite contestant to stay in the competition and win it,” Ntuli said.

Auditions are scheduled as follows:

  • lHumansdorp Cultural Centre, March 1
  • Queenstown Arts Centre, March 7
  • Maclear Town Hall, March 14
  • Mthatha Arts Centre, March 21
  • Bizana Youth Centre (Love Life), March 28
  • East London ECAVC, April 12

The talent search is only open to Eastern Cape artists between the ages of 16 and 34 years.

Ntuli said no group performances would be allowed. “A person can perform their own composition or a cover version,” he said.

Registration forms are available at ECAVC and in all department of sport, recreation, arts and culture district offices. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
