The festive spirit will reach the DJ Sobey Old Age Home early when the Buffalo Flats community host their annual Christmas carols and candlelight event on Saturday.

One of the organisers, Germaine Gamiet, said the carols evening had been part of their community’s calendar since 2012.

“It was just a couple of people from the community who wanted to do something that would bring everybody together while at the same time raising money for the home, which needs all the support with their financial difficulties,” said Gamiet.

He said on Saturday local musicians, church groups and school choirs would get together to perform traditional and modern Christmas carols.

“Choirs will include the AW Barnes primary school choir, the Stirling chamber choir as well as a master choir that consists of different individuals as well as local gospel group Chosen,” he said, adding that activites would include a candle lighting ceremony.

Gamiet said the Hawks Motorcycle Club had been running a “Can Drive” and would hand over the collected goods to the home.

“We are also encouraging the public who want to attend to please bring one item of non-perishable food or anything that they can donate as these gifts will also add to the Christmas cheer,” said Gamiet.

He said that as a community they found it important to raise awareness about the home and their challenges.

“Not only that but we also want to activate a sense of responsibility within our community and a sense of participation and involvement.

“We also want the elderly to not feel alone during the festive season and for them to share in the joy of Christmas,” he said.

The home’s matron, Abigail Oliphant, said every donation went a long way towards helping them to save costs.

“For every food item we get that helps us save on the food money, which we can then use for something else.

“This event helps also because it gives our residents the feel of the Christmas season and helps us to also throw them a decent party and sometimes we have a little extra money which we then use to buy them gifts.

“We really do struggle financially, so we really appreciate these efforts,” said Oliphant.

The event starts at 6pm on Saturday at the Buffalo Flats Primary School hall.
