Citizens divided about porn TV

THERE have been mixed reactions to TopTV’s successful reapplication to be allowed to broadcast pornography.

The Saturday Dispatch took to the streets yesterday to ask people how they felt about the matter.

Some said that they did not understand what the fuss was about, as those not in favour had the choice to not subscribe to the channels.

“This is one of the freedoms we have in this country – nobody is forced to subscribe ,” said Mninawa Ngumbela.

Xolani Mamphofu said no-one is forced to watch the adult content and parents should activate the child lock for those channels.

“I am not too worried because I monitor what my children are watching. Besides, it easy to block channels,” said Kathy Donald.

Sbusiso Skiti felt it was not a bad decision.

“There is nothing weird about this. People do watch porn, especially the younger generation. It is a good decision.

“People might get some valuable insight into sexual issues,” said Skiti.

Others, however, had a different view. Comments on the Dispatch Facebook page represented an unhappy public, with many questioning the damage it might have on culture.

“Even with the regulations, children might still be able to watch. Some children have TVs in their rooms,” said Bongiwe Dlutu-Siya.

Bonga Jotina said it was sad news, and it seemed that South Africa promoted prostitution.

“Most of the country’s young people are unemployed. This might push them towards joining the porn industry for employment,” he said.

Karel van der Walt was disappointed and sad .

“So their thinking is ‘let’s take the prostitution and human trafficking pandemic in SA and make it 1000 times worse’. It makes no sense,” said Van der Walt.

Jongisilo Pokwana ka Menziwa, Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa Johannesburg chairman questioned what advancement it would bring. “We needed to ask ourselves: How does it advance our fragile society which, like a small baby, still needs nurturing in order to mould it into a responsible, caring and intellectually engaging nation?” —
