Cogta boss ‘suspended’ as sex-for-jobs probe deepens

The first step against a senior official in the sex-for-jobs scandal that has rocked Bhisho over the past four months has been taken.

This week, provincial cooperative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) head Stanley Khanyile was placed on precautionary suspension.

Cogta MEC Fikile Xasa confirmed Khanyile had been placed on precautionary suspension following an investigation into sex-for-jobs claims in the department.

On the department’s investigation Khanyile said it was continuing and was meant to conclude next week.

“I’m going to wait for the outcome of that investigation and if there are issues that I have to deal with I will do so … in fact I’m still hoping that the investigators will also ask me to respond if there are issues I have to respond to,” he said.

Nehawu chairman at Cogta, Lennox Maho, said while the union had not been formally told of Khanyile’s suspension, they supported it.

“This has been our call for some time now and we are happy,” Maho said.

In July, the Dispatch published a report of a woman in her 50s who claimed to have endured seven years of sexual assault – repeatedly being raped and degraded by her boss in Xasa’s department.

She submitted an affidavit detailing her assault at the hands of her then boss, who has since left the department.

The allegations of nepotism and managers using their positions to demand sexual favours in exchange for jobs first surfaced at the Bhisho Legislature a few months back.

This prompted premier Phumulo Masualle to set up a team led by safety and liaison head Ngaka Mosehana to probe the allegations across all provincial departments.

Speaker Noxolo Kiviet also launched inquiries into similar claims at the legislature.

It was reported that Masualle’s team had minimal success as it only received one formal complaint – for nepotism – while Kiviet’s had stalled due to the non-availability of a retired judge to preside. — mphumziz@dispatch.co.za
