Democratic Alliance (DA) Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate Athol Trollip has accused the Eastern Cape government and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of protecting metro safety boss Linda Mti from prosecution.
During a press conference at the DA’s provincial office in Port Elizabeth‚ Trollip‚ flanked by MP and DA federal executive chairman James Selfe‚ tabled what the party said was documentary evidence of a cover-up by state agencies to protect Mti.
Mti‚ a former correctional services national commissioner‚ is still under investigation by the Hawks for fraud allegations linked to the awarding of tenders worth about R2-billion to the Bosasa group between 2004 and 2006 when he was the commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services.
He was appointed by the metro as executive director for safety and security last month.
Trollip claims the cover-up was a conspiracy involving the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) as well as the provincial government and the NPA.
He said the SIU’s Sefura Mongalo told the media last week that the Bosasa corruption report was only completed in 2013.
“The DA can disclose that this directly contradicts a press statement in December 2009. The statement explicitly outlines how the completed SIU report had been received‚ and forwarded to the SAPS for further investigation at the time‚” he said.
Trollip said he would laying a criminal charge against Mti by the end of the week‚ but was still seeking advice on the nature of the charge.
“We are doing this because we don’t want to inherit a corrupt government or corrupt officials. There is no reason not to prosecute‚” he said.
