This week sees the start of East  London’s dance season in which the city’s dance studios stage productions and all their dancers get to show off their skills.

At the Guild Theatre tonight is Land of Oz by the Karen Wilkie Dance Academy. Based on the children’s story, The Wizard of Oz, it portrays the adventures of a young Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her home in a cyclone.

The show is performed in a contemporary setting with all costumes and sets designed locally. The cast consists of about 120 members, with Chase Collet performing the role of Dorothy and Amy-Lee Oberam portraying the witch, Theodora.

There are cast members as young as two years of age in the show who without a doubt will steal the show.

Tonight’s show is at 6.30pm, tomorrow and Saturday’s at 7pm and there is a matinee on Saturday at 2pm.

Tickets are available from Computicket, from R60 for pupils and R80 for adults.

The famous and ever-popular ballet of The Nutcracker will be presented by the Joanna Wright School of Ballet from August 26 to 29, with two shows on Saturday.

Revil Yon, a guest dancer from Cape Town City Ballet, performs the role of the Nutcracker Prince.

The traditional tale follows Clara who receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift from her godfather, Uncle Drosselmeyer.

This charming ballet, together with Tchaikovsky’s uplifting score, promises to be a treat for all ages. — DDR
