Deadline for electing ANC leadership

The leadership race for five ANC regions in the province must be over by the end of July.

ANC Calata bosses crafted a roadmap at a special provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting on Tuesday where they set May and July as deadlines for all affected regions to complete their elective conferences.

The regions scheduled to elect new regional executive committees (RECs) are Buffalo City Metro, OR Tambo, Chris Hani in Queenstown, Joe Gqabi, which covers the towns of Aliwal North, Barkly East, Burgersdorp and Jamestown, and the Sarah Baartman region, which includes Port Alfred and Grahamstown.

The delays may be good news for the BCM region where senior ANC leaders, including serving regional secretary Phumlani Mkolo, are in court for their alleged involvement in the misuse of R5.9-million relating to Nelson Mandela’s memorial services.

Mkolo is likely to contest to retain his secretary position. Other accused in the case are council speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele and senior councillor Sindiswa Gomba.

Simon-Ndzele is contesting the deputy chairman position and Gomba is listed as an additional member in one of the line-ups.

The Calata bosses first set the end of March as the deadline for BCM to elect its REC, while the end of May was the initial deadline for the other four regions.

The province was forced to extend its programme following delays at Luthuli House in auditing the standing of branch members.

“Yes final audit reports are out finally, with a few branches in OR Tambo disputing the dates captured in the records of their last BAGMs ,” said Mabuyane.

“The national auditors are coming back to the province to correct that.”

ANC branches in unaffected regions will continue convening their general meetings where party members nominate delegates to the regional elective conference and, where necessary elect new branch executive committees.

“All of will be held between end of May and the end of July,” said Mabuyane.

Sarah Baartman regional secretary Scara Njadayi, whose regional conference was due last September, said all they were waiting for were nomination forms after 57 of their 74 branches were cleared by auditors, giving them the 70% threshold to hold an elective conference.

“According to the PEC programme, which was set out on Tuesday, we will have to hold our conference between June 5 until the 7th.”
