Preperations for tomorrow’s Da Gama Interschools fashion competition are well under way, with preliminary judging having already taken place.

Cindy Meade, chairwoman of consumer studies in the East London region and a consumer studies teacher at Stirling High School, said the preliminary judging would ease pressure on the judges.

“Although the outlook will be different during the gala event, the prejudging gives the judges a chance to focus more on the garments without the frills and accessories,” she said.

The annual competition, now in its sixth year, gives young designers from different schools a chance to have their creations made and modelled in a professional setting.

The 29 designers are from Unathi High School, Stirling High School and Clarendon Girls’ High School.

They are all consumer studies pupils with clothing design being part of the curriculum. The young designers will use Da Gama fabrics supplied by Jacksons to create two outfits – trendy and evening wear.

Professional models from Dee M Fashion Promotions will show off the designs at what is anticipated to be a glitzy event at the Guild Theatre tomorrow.

Dee Vogel from Dee M Fashion Promotions described the standard of this year’s designs as “brilliant and exciting”.

“The designers themselves cannot contain their excitement,” said Vogel.

She said prizes included cash prizes for the top five designers, a modelling course, make-up to the value of R350 from Diva Studio, a hamper from Nahoon Spar as well as an all-expenses-paid midweek break at Umnenga Lodge for the parents of the top five designers. Entertainment will be provided by the Stirling Vocal Group and a dance performance by East London’s Natalie Engelbrecht and Robin Castle.

lDoors open at 6.30pm with the show starting at 7pm. Tickets are available at the Guild Theatre box office or Computicket – R60 for adults and R40 for scholars. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
