ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte will lead a team to the party’s provincial headquarters in King William’s Town today to grill leaders from four troubled ANC regions. The leaders from   Buffalo City Metro, OR Tambo, Amathole and Chris Hani in Queenstown will be questioned over complaints raised by fellow members.

Meanwhile a separate team of ANC national executive committee (NEC)  members will spend the week in BCM to deal “with political instability in the region,” ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa announced yesterday.

The week-long stay in BCM this week follows a visit on Sunday by NEC deployees to the region.

The national delegation included NEC members Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Fikile Xasa, Kodwa and Lungi Gcabashe.

Kodwa said a separate team led by Duarte would meet regional chairs and secretaries from BCM, Chris Hani, Amathole and OR Tambo over complaints by branch members.

All four regions are preparing for elective regional conferences and rival factions are accusing each other of “gate keeping”.

This is the alleged practice of only allowing members favourable to a certain faction to participate in electoral meetings.

Kodwa said Duarte’s team would divide the meeting into two sessions.

“In the morning, we will deal with regional chairmen and secretaries of all affected regions, and in the afternoon we will then allow individuals who lodged disputes to present their cases,” he said.

Common in most of these cases, he said, are allegations of gate keeping and manipulation of membership forms to favour one faction against the other.

The Daily Dispatch reported   five ANC branch meetings in OR Tambo have degenerated into chaos after rival factions threw chairs, and in one incident a firearm was drawn.

Violent exchanges were also reported in Reeston in BCM after a faction convened a meeting without informing other members.

“During our visit to BCM on Sunday we received several complaints about political instability in the municipality as well as disunity in the regional executive,” said Kodwa.

He said some members claimed they received no clear guidance from the region on party programmes.

“We are going to spend the rest of this week to try and find solutions to these challenges,” added Kodwa.
