Top ANC leaders in the Eastern Cape were mandated to protect President Jacob Zuma at the extended national working committee (NWC) meeting yesterday.

The Daily Dispatch learnt yesterday that ANC provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle and provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane were delegated to support Zuma at the meeting, scheduled to discuss the latest challenges faced by the organisation amid calls for Zuma’s removal.

Several ANC veterans including Robben Islander Ahmed Kathrada and former minister in Zuma’s office Siphiwe Nyanda called for Zuma to quit.

This follows a Constitutional Court judgment on Thursday which ruled that Zuma violated the Constitution for not adhering to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s findings to pay back the portion of money spent on non-security upgrades at his Nkandla homestead.

After the ANC’s top six officials met at Zuma’s Pretoria residence, where the ruling was discussed, Zuma called a press conference and apologised to the nation for the “frustration and confusion” caused.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe also called a press conference on Friday announcing that the officials were fully behind Zuma and accepted the apology.

The party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) met in Port Elizabeth on Sunday where it resolved to oppose any plans to remove Zuma. It also denied claims of state capture by the Guptas.

ANC provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the provincial leaders agreed unanimously to support Zuma.
