EC ANC looks into mayor’s hospital bill

The Eastern Cape ANC has launched an investigation into taxpayers footing the R200000 hospital bill for Lukhanji’s mayor.

Responding to a Daily Dispatch question during a post ANC legkotla press conference on what the party was going to do now that the council is considering endorsing Gqiba’s decision, ANC provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle said the party’s Chris Hani regional executive had been assigned to conduct an investigation.

“Upon us reading about it , we have referred it to the local municipality through the regional leadership for us to get an explanation of what really this is all about,” said Masualle.

The Dispatch can reveal today that a new vehicle has been hired for Makanda to continue with her duties.

Feketshane confirmed the hiring of a new mayoral vehicle now than she is back in office.

“The municipality has made interim arrangements through its policies to allocate a warm body to chauffeur her in the execution of her duties.

“We can only quantify the costs of hiring once we acquire a new vehicle to replace the damaged one. In this regard we have already advertised for a new one,” said Feketshane.

Masualle took a swipe at the media for focusing on details such as who was driving the mayoral vehicle instead of highlighting the fact that a life had been lost and another survived miraculously.
