EC department of correctional services warns of job scam

The Eastern Cape correctional services department has warned job seekers to be wary of an ongoing scam offering a job at one of their centres in exchange for cash, which can be up to R6000.

“We are saddened by the fact that several desperate and jobless South Africans in the Eastern Cape have fallen prey to these rotten scoundrels who pretend to have intimate knowledge of the internal recruitment processes within the department,” provincial spokesman Zama Feni said.

The way they operate involves the offer of a job on condition that money is deposited into an account through the Money Market services at major retail stores. The caller warns this should all be kept secret.

When they find a victim willing to hand over cash, “the scammer will tell you to wait for him/her at the access control gate of a particular correctional centre for him/her to take your measurements for a correctional services uniform or to get a uniform. You will realise you have been fleeced when the scammer does not pitch up and his/her phone just goes unanswered,” Feni said.

He said this has taken place at several centres, including St Albans in Port Elizabeth, Sterkspruit, Mthatha, Grahamstown and others.

“Be warned. The department of correctional services does not sell jobs. When jobs are available, posts will be advertisedand people will be instructed to follow the right processes and not the quick-fix processes like these of the job scammers,” he said.

The department urged people to follow the right channels and avoid being victims of scammers.

“Posts are advertised and candidates should fill out the Z83 application which is also NOT sold.

“Thereafter, candidates who have been selected from the short-listed ones, are invited for interviews.

“The successful ones are informed and then taken to one of our training colleges. It is regrettable that poor and unsuspecting citizens are defrauded of their hard-earned cash by crooks who conduct all their evil deeds under the name of the department of correctional services.” — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
