EFF to drum up support for Biko celebration rally

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leadership including Julius Malema will be in Buffalo City Metro (BCM) next week to drum up support for their rally celebrating the life and times of Steve Biko.

The Daily Dispatch has learnt that the party’s national secretary-general Godrich Gardee is expected to arrive in BCM today to assist with preparations.

The rally is to be held at King William’s Town’s Victoria Grounds next Saturday when more than 15000 EFF members and supporters are expected to attend.

EFF provincial spokeswoman Yoliswa Yako said Malema will arrive next week to launch a campaign to mobilise for the Saturday rally.

“Starting from next week together with the national leadership we will be setting up a mobilisation campaign going around communities in the BCM area,” Yako said.

The last time the EFF held a rally in BCM was in April last year when about 15000 people packed Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe stadium.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday Gardee said the party would be painting BCM red from “corner to corner”.

Asked what motivated the party to convene the rally in honour of Biko Gardee said: “Biko spoke of the dignity of the black nation and 21 years into democracy their dignity has not been restored.

“Black people do not have basic services like water and land, so this rally is for voicing what Biko was advocating.”

The rally is set to start at noon on Saturday September 12.

Various local artists are expected to provide entertainment until late into the evening. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
