EL woman hopes to be Miss Curvaceous

East London beauty Desi Cornelius will be showing off her curves with the hope of clinching the Miss Curvaceous title in Johannesburg next week.

Miss Curvaceous is a beauty pageant dedicated to curvaceous models hosted by Johannesburg-based modeling agency C Square Models and Promotion Agency.

The pageant incorporates fashion and design, into an entertaining showcase for all age groups.

Cornelius, an internal data coordinator at Medal Paints, said she came across an advert for the event when she was searching for modelling jobs.

“When I saw the ad I thought ‘why not do this’ and I am the kind of person that likes to make things happen. I sent out my portfolio, they liked it and we did an interview and I was told I had made it to the top 10.”

C Square Models and Promotion Agency's co-founder Richard Femi Jegede said the pageant was aimed at exposing the talent of curvaceous women and also help them build their confidence.

Jegede said these body types were often overlooked in the modelling world.

“Even though studies show that in South Africa the most popular size in women is 12 and 47% of women are dress size 16 or over,” he said.

Jegede said through initiatives such as Miss Curvaceous they would also educate women about their body shapes and teach them how to dress accordingly.

“There are different curvaceous body shapes namely the hourglass curved, pear curved, apple body shape and banana/ boyish curved – each woman needs to know what clothes to buy that will suit their shape,” he said.

Cornelius said she had no desire to lose her weight and would continue showing her talent in various platforms.

“I wear between size 34 and 36. I am comfortable in my body but all I need to do is to get fit,” she said.

Jegede said on the day of the event they would also give designers an opportunity to put their designs on display.

“There will also be several opportunities to network during the event as it is in everyone’s interest to make the most out of the talent and established connections who are involved”, he said.

He also added that the Miss Curvaceous top 10 finalists would be expected to compete in various categories which include casual wear, swim wear, talent show and evening or cocktail wear.

The winner of the competition will be given a one-year study bursary and a clothing voucher.

Cornelius said she would love to finish her masters degree in commerce.
