EL's Mobi Dixon teams up with top music label

Popular East London DJ/producer Mobi Dixon has joined Sony Music Entertainment Africa and House Afrika Records.

House Afrika Records is South Africa’s leading dance music label which joined forces with Sony Music in 2011.

Mobi Dixon, whose real name is Mabi Ntuli, released his debut album Tribal Soul in 2014 under his own production company, Mobi Dixon Productions.

Last year saw the DJ gaining national recognition, from being play-listed on leading stations to going overseas.

Ntuli said the exclusive licensing agreement with Sony Music Entertainment Africa and House Afrika Records on Friday would see them release his sophomore album later this year.

He said his relationship with Sony started when he worked on a compilation with House Afrika last year.

“They were interested to release my Tribal Soul Special Edition album last year but I wasn’t ready for that. I wanted to build my brand on my own before joining a label,” he said.

Under his own label, Ntuli gained popularity all over the country and this year saw him receiving his first Metro FM and South African Music Awards nominations.

“I’ve worked with other companies in the past and I felt they did not take my brand seriously,” he said.

Ntuli said he was not a signed artist but was in a partnership with Sony Music and House Afrika Records.

“They will be licensing my next album and will also be taking my brand internationally,” he said, adding that he still owned his music.

Sony Music’ Spiro Damaskinos said they were excited to have Ntuli on board.

“We believe that together we can take Mobi’s ‘tribal soul’ sound and brand to a higher level not only is South Africa but across the African continent and into the international arena,” said Damaskinos.

The City Rains hit-maker said House Afrika has always been close to his heart.

“For over a decade House Afrika has produced some of the music which has inspired me to become the producer I am today,” he said.

Ntuli said his second album would be titled Live the Music. He said his first single from the album would be released next month.
