FIRE AND ICE: More snow and rain will be on the way

WHILE heavy snow falls yesterday caused havoc on Eastern Cape roads, gale-force winds fanned a fire through a township.

At Hogsback, Peter Colyvas, owner of The Edge, said: “It’s snowing like crazy.

“Snow is coming in horizontally. Hogsback is fully booked for the weekend. I have never had so many calls. There’s a lot of hot chocolate, gluewein, sherry and fires on the go and snowmen all along the road.”

Billy Mollentze, editor of the Barkly East Reporter, said: “The roads are incredibly dangerous. We are all trying to keep warm.

“Farmers are in the middle of lambing and there has been a drought so without a lot of green feeding, and with this cold, we could lose a lot of newborn lambs.”

Tiffindell Ski Resort manager Elizma Den Heyer said: “We have 22 guests from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein out on the mountain now. Roads here are closed. There is no wind, just snow coming down.”

Agri EC president Ernest Pringle, who farms in the Winterberg foothills, said: “It will get a lot colder from tomorrow and it will then be advisable to keep newborn lambs and kid goats inside.”

The Out The Green Box Nite Series run planned around East London Golf Club last night was postponed to September 12.

Eskom spokesman Zama Mpondwana said galeforce winds and snow disrupted electricity supply in several parts of the province.
