Fort Hare set to announce official SRC

The University of Fort Hare will today announce its official Student Representative Council (SRC).

This comes after a week-long verification process by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC ) following objections lodged by the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (Daso) and Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC).

However, UFH acting spokesman Khotso Moabi said the IEC had communicated to the university that the preliminary results would not change.

“EFF Student Command and Daso lodged objections on the results whereas the Pan Africanist Movement of Azania (Pasma) with some individuals lodged enquiries which were all dealt with by the IEC,” Moabi said.

DA Federal Youth leader Yusuf Cassim had claimed the voters’ roll was not published, a requirement stated in the university’s SRC Constitution.

“The SRC Constitution prescribes the publishing of the voters’ roll to be done seven days prior to the election date,” said Cassim.

He further claimed that the voters’ roll was inaccurate, incomplete and lacked credibility.

Daso said it would still seek legal opinion on the matter.

Attempts to get comment from EFFSC’s Ntando Sibizo were unsuccessful at the time of writing yesterday.

The ANC-aligned Sasco last week wrested control of the university’s SRC from Daso, taking 43% of the vote to Daso’s 40%.

This followed a a major upset in 2015 when Sasco lost control of the SRC to Daso.

Sasco yesterday said Bulali Rawana was their choice for the SRC president.

Winning the majority of votes means that Sasco is entitled to take the SRC’s top two seats – the presidency and secretary-general.

Sasco provincial general secretary Lwando Mangqishi said they had only named Rawana now because the organisation had struggled to hold branch meetings in order to come up with a name.

“Students have been busy with preparations for the final tests for the semester and they could not find time to hold branch meetings,” said Mangqishi.
