Four female Brazilian ‘body packers’ found with R2.2m cocaine

Customs officials have intercepted four Brazilian women in possession of 8.5kg of cocaine with an estimated value of over R2.2 million at the Cape Town International Airport.

The South African Revenue Service said on Wednesday the women had been stopped for inspection of their hand luggage by Custom officials‚ who also conducted body searches.

Officials found three packages wrapped in brown paper and plastic on each woman’s body.

The women were taken in for questioning and tests confirmed the white substance to be cocaine.

The bust took place at 11.40am on Monday.

The four women‚ one male travelling with them and the narcotics were handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation. They are expected to appear at the Bellville Magistrate Court on Thursday.

Police attached to Cape Town International Airport also arrested a 27-year-old man for possession of cocaine with an estimated street value of R500‚000 on Monday afternoon. “The suspect arrived from an international flight‚” Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.

In Johannesburg‚ a 32-year-old South African woman was arrested by police officers at the OR Tambo International Airport on Friday night‚ shortly after she arrived from Dubai‚ for possession of cocaine weighing 5‚7kg and valued at R1‚6 million.

Police found the stash of drugs hidden in tins “which were nicely sealed“‚ during a joint operation consisting of members of the police Trans International Investigation Unit‚ Tactical Response Team‚ Intelligence and K9 Units ‚ SAPS spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said. “We have established from her passport entries that she has been a regular visitor abroad‚” Naidoo said.

Constable Rwexana commented: “Police management is pleased with the arrests of drug mules in the past few days and commend members in their efforts to fight drug trafficking“.

Meanwhile‚ Gauteng police also seized drugs and chemicals worth R20 million during a raid on a house in Brackenhurst‚ Alberton‚ on Tuesday. Two Nigerian men were arrested on charges of possession and dealing in drugs.
