Four Mdantsane men arrested for allegedly stealing clothing items

Four Mdantsane men were arrested on Friday outside King William’s Town after a high-speed chase, minutes after allegedly stealing clothing items worth more than R10000 from shops

King William’s Town police spokeswoman Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that four suspects aged between 26 and 53 were arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property.

They are expected to appear at the King William’s Town Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Mawisa said the arrests came after police received information that suspects travelling in a Toyota Tazz were allegedly stealing from shops around King William’s Town.

“Police followed up on the information supplied by community members. A few minutes later they spotted the vehicle at the town’s Alexandra Road and gave chase. After a high-speed chase, police managed to corner and stop the vehicle near the Breidbach crossing. They searched the vehicle and found clothing items from different shops in the King CBD to the value of R10000,” Mawisa said.

The suspects failed to produce proof of payment for the items in their possession.

“They were immediately arrested and charged with the possession of suspected stolen property.”

Mawisa said the vehicle used as a suspected getaway car was not reported stolen and was confiscated by the police.

King William’s Town police station commander, Colonel Andile Lamana, thanked the community members for sharing valuable information which led to the arrests.

He warned that anyone who bought stolen goods had become criminals too.
