Fredericks gushes over Jobodwana

NAMIBIAN sprint legend Frankie Fredericks has given young South African speedster and former Selborne College pupil Anaso Jobodwana a stunning endorsement.

“I haven’t seen anything like that coming out of our region in terms of talent,” Fredericks said yesterday.

But Fredericks’s only concern was that Jobodwana, who turned professional after the World Student Games, continues with his studies.

Jobodwana, who hails from King William’s Town originally, moved to Florida from Mississippi to join a new coach, although he insisted he would complete his academic programme. “Education is the key. I hope he doesn’t neglect his studies,” said Fredericks, who completed his BSc and MBA degrees in the US before joining the paid ranks.

“Once you are done with your sports ... we also have to prepare athletes for that. I have met quite a lot of athletes who are depressed after they stop.”

Fredericks said he knew Olympic gold medallists who didn’t know what to do in retirement: “Even if you’re an Olympic gold medallist it doesn’t mean you’re going to find a job.”
