The donation to pupils at 11 schools in Middledrift was possible through a joint venture between Volkswagen (VW), Qubeka and World Vision as part of their Bicycle Empowerment Programme (BEEP).

A total of 300 bicycles were handed over on Thursday this week at a ceremony held at a sportsfield near Kama Senior Secondary School. The event was attended by representatives of the programme, including VW brand ambassadors Benny Masekwameng from Masterchef and Pearl Thusi from Metro FM.

Other delegates included Nkonkobe district municipality mayor Anele Ntsangana, traditional leader Chief Nokwandisa Kama, education specialist Yandisa Plata and other stakeholders.

The 300 bikes were additional to the 300 handed over at the same venue last week.

BEEP was introduced to South Africa in 2013 by Qubeka in partnership with World Vision after the programme, founded by World Bicycle Relief, became successful when started in Zambia in 2009.

World Vision project manager Henco Visser said the bicycles were given to pupils who travelled long distances to school, to encourage them to get to school and boost their marks.
