Homeboy hits big time in rap freedom fest

A MDANTSANE-BORN man has been named one of five rap acts to perform at the eighth annual Back To The City (BTTC) Youth Festival in Johannesburg on Freedom Day.

Two weeks ago the Daily Dispatch reported that Lungisile “Lush ByTheWay” Mdunyelwa had made it to the top 20 in the 10k Challenge, a competition which forms part of the BTTC festival. The top five rappers and producers voted for are invited to perform at the festival on April 27.

He is not the only East London rap artist performing at the event – Yakeem Ben Israel and Xolisa “Blaqphamas” Hackula did not enter the 10k Challenge but join seasoned, national hip-hop acts on the main stage. Hackula said: “I met one of the organisers when I was on C-Live’s show on 5FM a few years back. He put a song of mine on his compilation TTP presents Hip-Hop Sessions vol. 2. I guess my name and work got me on.”

Israel said the organisers acknowledged his work and the moves he is making. “The invitation means whatever I am doing is working. It proves one doesn’t need to migrate to Joburg or Cape Town to be recognised,” he said. Tickets for the festival range from R60 to R180. Visit the website www.backtothefestival.com
