TRANSKEI comedian Nomakhisimsi is in line for an award after being nominated again for the best indigenous comedian at this year’s South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma).

Nomakhisimsi, real name Ntombifuti Ncwayiba, is last year’s winner of the category.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Ncwayiba said she was humbled to be nominated again.

“This is exciting for me. I can finally see the light,” she said, adding that her dream was to be a recognised indigenous comedian both provincially and nationally.

Ncwayiba recently shared her humorous stories at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

The Mpondo former teacher was discovered by then arts and culture MEC Xoliswa Tom.

Straight after that, the department encouraged her to record her first comedy DVD, Mjwentru, which was sold on the streets in Transkei and by herself.

Since her debut four years ago, Ncwayiba has recorded three more comedy DVDs without the assistance of the department.

“We are currently working towards filming my fifth DVD,” she said.

After leaving her teaching job last year, Ncwayiba said she was now making a living through performances around the province.

Ncwayiba’s storytelling is in the Mpondo dialect and she shares stories about rural people, from cheating wives to uneducated parents.

She hopes to take the award home again this year.

Other Eastern Cape artists who have been nominated include: Zola Soul for best newcomer, Buyani Jini for best poet, Siyabulela Rasmeni for best vernacular hip hop album, Ntando for the best afro soul album alongside Zahara.

In the best community radio DJ category local nominees are: Lungile David from Mdantsane FM, Songezo Xayimpi from Forte FM, Bill Gazilami Mkhalipi from Radio Grahamstown and Gudla from Unitra Community Radio.

Forte FM’s Melumzi Xego has been nominated for the best cultural; talk show, Umhlobo Wenene FM’s Saba Mbixane has been nominated for the best traditional DJ in the PBS category and his show Lavutha ibhayi has also been nominated for best traditional music radio program.

East London-born singing sensation Zahara has also been nominated in numerous categories.

Daily Dispatch photojournalist Lulamile Feni has been nominated for the best traditional and cultural news journalist in the print category, alongside Jabulani Langa from Daily Sun and Thokozani Ndlovu from Isolezwe ngomgqibelo.

The award ceremony takes place early next month at the University of Fort Hare sports complex in Alice.

It is the last year the awards are being hosted in the Eastern Cape.
