Juju pulls big crowd in Mthatha

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema received a rock star welcome from thousands of excited party supporters in Mthatha yesterday.

The excited Mandela Park township residents filled a huge tent erected on a local soccer field and went crazy as the EFF leaders arrived, snapping pictures of them.

They chanted Malema’s name and screamed “fighter Ndlozi we love you”.

The excitement continued for a full 45 minutes after Malema and party spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi arrived.

His visit to Mthatha was part of his tour to the Eastern Cape to drum up support for the August 3 municipal elections. After managing to get the crowd to settle down, Malema told the masses the party would win the King Sabata Dalindyebo and OR Tambo district councils respectively.

On Thursday, he visited Western Thembuland King Siyambonga Matanzima and told his subjects to vote Zuma and the “corrupt ANC out”.

Yesterday he continued where he left off.

“We are going to bring Zuma down.

“We are going to bring Mbete down.

“We are going to bring the ANC down because it is corrupt and full of thieves,” said Malema.

Before addressing the crowd, he went on a door-to-door campaign at neighbouring Phola Park, where residents complained about poor service delivery.

Malema told residents he would fix the “so-called town” of Mthatha.

“The so-called town has potholes the size of Jacob Zuma’s swimming pool,” he said to laughter and applause.

He encouraged residents to stop saying they were “doing it for Mandela” when voting for the ANC.

Mandela was “no more” and a vote for the ANC was a vote for Zuma, he said.

He told the residents that he would be back before the end of June for a proper rally at a stadium, where cows and sheep would be slaughtered.

Today the EFF top brass are expected to address communities in Butterworth and East London. — ndamasem@
