Chiefs, the clergy and politicians paid respects at the homestead of the late Umhlobo Wenene FM disc jockey Saba Mbixane at the weekend.

Leading the royal delegation was Contralesa provincial secretary Nkosi Mwelo Nonkonyane, Arts and Culture MEC Pemmy Majodina as well as retired Methodist Church Bishop Don Dabula to mention but a few.

Mbixane died last Thursday after spending 17 days at the Nelson Mandela Central Hospital’s intensive care unit following a motorbike accident. He was declared brain dead after suffering severe head injuries.

Nonkonyane called on the state to declare his funeral a provincial official funeral because of the extraordinary contribution he had made in promoting traditional music.

“He was a farmer, a traditionalist and played a key role in promoting the culture of African people,” said Nonkonyane.

Mbixane will be buried at his home village of Mandileni in Mount Frere on Sunday and mourners are urged to wear traditional attire and break away from western attire.

The main provincial memorial service will be held at the Mthatha 2010 Legacy Stadium in Mthatha on Thursday.

On Saturday there will be a live broadcast of his radio programme Lavuth’Ibhayi to be broadcast by both Umhlobo Wenene and Ukhozi FM.

A night vigil will be held at Mbixane’s home village of Mandileni from 6pm on Saturday to 6am Sunday.

Mbixane won six Satma awards. He started presenting an African traditional music show 29 years ago.

National Heritage Council CEO advocate Sonwabile Mangcotywa Mbixane said: “Mbixane qualifies to be called an icon, a legend. One of those we cannot do without.” — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
