‘Little Elvis’ grows up to direct Guild show

East London’s own Little Elvis is all grown up and is now directing professional theatre productions.

Daniel Anderson, 15, is the brains behind the On The Road Again musical production that will be showing at the Guild Theatre this weekend.

Daniel explained the production as a musical journey around the world.

“So we are visiting different countries, departing from South Africa, then Australia, Europe and the US. The show, led by a live band, is basically an exploration of smash hits from all four countries.”

He said working with professionals such as Hiles and Corson was a bit daunting but a fun experience.

“I was really worried about having to direct them, me being so young and them being so experienced, but they were very supportive and working with them was really an experience that I won’t quickly forget,” he said.

Daniel, who is passionate about music and theatre, said he wanted to put together the benefit concert because he realised that cancer affected millions of people around the world.

It has affected him directly, too.

“I lost my great-grandmother to the disease, so this is a cause very close to my heart,” he said.

“And cancer is a developmental disease, there’s ongoing research on finding a cure, so hopefully the money we make will go towards that research.”

He thanked the cast and crew for agreeing to participate for free.

“In a world filled with negativity it is always a nice change to see someone willing to do something for someone else and not expect compensation. It still baffles how selfless that is,” he said.

lOn The Road Again opens on Friday at the Guild Theatre at 7pm, with a second show on Saturday. Tickets cost R100. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
