Man thanks God he’s alive after crash

A SAWMILL truck driver walked away from an accident scene without so much as a scratch.

Zenzo Siziba was driving in his red Mazda bakkie on the R61 when he was involved in an accident shortly after passing the Mthatha central police station.

“I heard loud noise and then a big bang,” said the 33-year-old father of two from Libode.

A BMW had smashed into him and he lost control of his vehicle, which went off the road and rolled down an embankment. The accident happened on Friday night.

“I tried to swerve the bakkie to the left to avoid going to the embankment, but all efforts were in vain. As the bakkie was about to roll down the embankment, I said a short prayer and asked God to save me for the sake of my young children and wife.”

He said the bakkie rolled and he lost consciousness. He struggled to unbuckle the seatbelt but managed to free himself.

“The biggest struggle was to move out of the bakkie. I used a wheel spanner to break the window and managed to crawl out of the passenger side window.”

He emerged from the wreck with not so much as a scratch, much to the amazement of those who rushed to the accident scene.

“I don’t know how I survived the accident. It was only God’s miracles that saved my life and gave me a second chance at life,’’ said Siziba.

“I thank the Lord Almighty that here I stand, uninjured.”

The BMW driver did not sustain injuries, but there was damage to the front of the vehicle.

Witness Xolani Soga said: “The bakkie was hit by the BMW and flew before it rolled down the embankment, and I thought that all those who were in the bakkie were dead. But I was shocked to see this man come out of the bakkie, which was lying on its rooftop.”

Siziba said when he arrived home late on Friday night, his family were happy to see him alive.

“I am Christian, but I have not been to church in a long time. Maybe this is God’s plan to revive my connection with him.”

On Saturday morning – hours after having a near-death experience – Siziba and his family attended a church service.

“I still pinch myself to ensure that I am alive.” – lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
