MANDELA FAMILY AT UNION BUILDINGS

The Mandela family and a government delegation passed through the amphitheatre of the Union Buildings, in Pretoria, on Wednesday to view the body of former president Nelson Mandela.

Members of the Gauteng provincial government accompanied the family during their private viewing.

President Jacob Zuma announced on Tuesday that the amphitheatre was being renamed in honour of Mandela.

Zuma, former president Thabo Mbeki, and Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel were among those at the Union Buildings on Wednesday.

Mandela's widow Graca Machel and his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela were also there.

Shortly before 11am, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe viewed the body.

The mood outside the building remained upbeat, with many people wearing South African flags or political regalia.

Many said they had not been able to attend the memorial service held at the FNB Stadium, in Soweto, on Tuesday, but would not miss an opportunity to pay their last respects to Mandela on Wednesday.

Members of the public will be allowed to view the body from midday until 5pm on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, the public viewing hours will be from 8am to 5pm.
