Judge Clive Plasket of the Grahamstown High Court granted a preservation order to the Asset Forfeiture Unit yesterday.

The surprise application by the state targets a number of entities and individuals who received downstream payments from Buffalo City Municipality funds earmarked for Mandela’s memorial and funeral last year.

Dispatch, which broke the story, has reported at length on how the funds were disbursed in alleged contravention of laws and processes.

“The order was the result of excellent work and good cooperation by the commercial branch of the Hawks in East London, and the prosecution in this matter,” NPA spokesman Nathi Mncube said.

More details follow in tomorrow’s Dispatch, including explosive allegations contained in the application.
