Mandla hosts sports tournament

NELSON Mandela’s grandson Mandla hosted a sports tournament at Mvezo over the weekend with four teams from traditional areas including KwaZulu-Natal participating.

The tournament came after Mandla had solicited R100000 funding from the Norwegian Football Association.

The three other traditional areas were led by Queen Noluntu Dalindyebo of Sithebe and Thembu traditional leaders Nkosi Khululekani Mkhulisi and Nkosi Bonginkosi Mthembu, both from KwaZulu-Natal.

Guests and fans were entertained with traditional music and dance and later there was a feast of traditional food including the beef of two cattle.

Mandla said the funding came from former PSL CEO Kjetil Siem after a team from Norway played in South Africa.

The four traditional leaders had two teams each – one for soccer and the other for netball.

Mandla said the tournament, started in 2011, would rotate between the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

“The funding from the Norwegian Football Association is to develop sport and promote soccer in our areas,” Mandla said. “The tournament is aimed at uniting traditional leaders, involving them in sport and putting them in the forefront of fighting moral ills like substance abuse among the youth in rural areas,” he added.

“ Last year there were 56 teams that participated and that is good. It means our youth are interested in sport,” said Mandla.

Queen Noluntu Dalindyebo, wife of King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo of AbaThembu, called on traditional leaders to use more initiatives to develop youth and promote sport.

The tournament was won by Mandla’s team “Mvezo Komkhulu” which beat Queen Dalindyebo’s Crusaders FC 5-4 on penalties after the teams ended in a 1-all draw. —
