Mdluli to face murder charge in 2015

Suspended crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli has until June next year to answer to charges related to the murder of his ex-lover's husband 15 years ago.

On Friday the Johannesburg High Court postponed the case against Mdluli and his co-accused, former policeman Mthembeni Mthunzi. Mdluli’s lawyer, Ike Motloung, told the court that Mdluli was “ill disposed” and had been booked off after undergoing surgery.

Mdluli and Mthunzi are facing a host of charges, including intimidation, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. Mdluli is facing 12 of the charges, while Mthunzi is facing seven.

The charges relate to the February 1999 kidnapping and murder of Oupa Ramogibe, who was married to Mdluli’s former girlfriend Tshidi Buthelezi.

Charges against Mdluli were withdrawn in 2012, but were reinstated this year after lobby group Freedom under Law successfully challenged the National Prosecuting Authority’s decision to drop the charges against him.

Mdluli is also facing fraud and corruption charges related to allegations that he employed friends and family and misused police funds to buy expensive cars.
