On  his birthday yesterday, the late Dr Mpilo Rubusana was honoured with the unveiling of a memorial bust outside the East London City Hall.

Sports, arts and culture MEC Pemmy Majodina, Buffalo City Metro mayor Alfred Mtsi and the Rubusana family were in attendance. Provincial ANC spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane represented the premier’s office as premier Phumulo Masualle was at the ANC NEC meeting.

Majodina said the purpose of the event was to honour Rubusana, who was a leader in religious, sport and political circles.

“We have made a commitment as a department to honour him because of the sacrifices he made. We are rewriting our history and there is no Eastern Cape history without Rubusana,” she said.

Majodina revealed a plan to erect a 1.8m tall statue of Rubusana. “Together with Steve Biko, we want these two leaders to flank the city hall where decisions for our city are made, because he was a well-rounded leader who cared about the people. This also rightfully coincides with Human Rights Month because he fought for human rights,” Majodina said.

Rubusana’s grandson, Vusumzi Rubusana was delighted.
