KEVIN MILEHAM, the Democratic Alliance’s chief whip in Buffalo City Metro council would soon be off to Cape Town to replace Athol Trollip as the party’s member of Parliament.
This follows what Mileham described as “vigorous process” by the party’s electoral college.
About 19 candidates applied for the position and only 10 candidates including him made it to the shortlist.
The national assembly position was left vacant when Trollip moved to the Bhisho Legislature to fill a vacancy after the passing of Pine Pienaar.
Speaking to the Daily Dispatch , Mileham said: “I’m very excited. I am looking forward to the new challenge. I think this going to be a big learning curve, because obviously this is a new ball game compared to council. But I’m looking forward to it.”
Mileham, 42, was known for keeping the ANC-led council on its toes.
In December last year, he led 21 DA councillors to vacate the meeting they deemed a waste of time before it even started, after noting that the ANC “was running away from discussing certain vital issues”.
The items included:
l Questions around a council-hired Mercedes-Benz car damaged while in possession of ANC councillor Sindiswa Gomba;
l Enquiries about the city’s liquor bylaw which had not yet been adopted after being thrown out by court more than three years ago; and
l Questions around the hiring of vehicles by the metro’s Executive Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha.
The party’s provincial spokeswoman Veliswa Mvenya described Mileham as “someone who has shown the drive, commitment and energy to promote the vision of the DA over a long period of time”.
Mileham is a product of the DA’s National Young Leaders Programme.
He said his understanding was that he would assume his new position on June 1. —
