Mother held after death of son

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death, allegedly by his mother, during an argument in Grahamstown on Sunday morning.

Police investigating the murder said Rosy Links of Sun City, some 8km from the Grahamstown police station, allegedly used a bread knife to stab her son Vuyolwethu Links.

He sustained stab wounds to the chest.

At the time of the incident, Vuyolwethu was in the company of an unidentified friend who fled to a nearby house to relate what had happened.

Neighbours alerted the police.

Grahamstown police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender yesterday said the stabbing took place at 1.50am in the street in front of the family home.

Govender said police and paramedics found Vuyolwethu dead at the scene. He was not wearing a shirt.

The boy’s mother was arrested. Police photographed the alleged murder weapon and removed it.

Govender said it was still unclear what the mother and son had argued about.

“The suspect faces a charge of murder,” Govender said.

The police spokeswoman added that anyone who might have witnessed the incident should come forward to assist police.

The 38-year-old woman appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon.

Her case was postponed to January 18 for a formal bail application. Govender said Links was remanded in custody until then.

Grahamstown magistrate Ntsoki Moni and state prosecutor Asanda Koliti presided over the matter.

Grahamstown Cluster Commander Brigadier Morgan Govender yesterday sent condolences to the family.
