New Buffalo City Metro mayor Alfred Mtsi has declared war against corruption and fraud.

Making his maiden speech as BCM mayor at the Abbotsford Christian Centre yesterday, Mtsi said political leaders and public servants have been entrusted by communities to “govern and be accountable”.

“We will therefore, deal decisively and without fear or favour when matters are brought to our attention,” he said.

He then announced that a fraud hotline has been created in BCM and called on residents of the metro to make use of it.

The Daily Dispatch reported on several cases of corruption in BCM, two of which are still in court.

One concerns the misuse of more than R5.9-million meant for Nelson Mandela memorial services.

Former mayor Zukiswa Ncitha, former deputy mayor Temba Tinta and council speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele and six others face criminal charges for their alleged involvement in the misuse of the funds.

Ncitha’s mayoral predecessor, Zukisa Faku is also facing fraud charges after admitting that she misused the municipal credit card.

The mayor also announced that five CCTV cameras have been installed along the city’s beachfront and that the cameras would be fully operational “soon”.

He  made reference to an incident three years ago when two robbers attacked EFF chairman   Dali Mpofu while he was walking on the beach between Marina Glen and Bats Cave.

“This measure should help prove effective for ensuring the continuous safety of residents, visitors and business along the beachfront.”
