Musical talent unearthed

The annual Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod gives talented youngsters in East London the opportunity to showcase their musical skills.

After a week’s knockout stage, the best of the best will tonight exhibit and perform their work at the showcase concert spectacular.

Nathan Johannisen, who heads the event’s marketing and PR, said tonight’s show would be all about all the top performers who had received special mention from the adjudicators.

“This is a prestigious event. The medals will be handed over at the showcase concert to the musicians from the respective schools,” said Johannisen.

He said it had been fascinating to watch over the past two weeks how the schools supported each other and the level of respect they had for one another.

Adjudicator Pamela Kierman, who regularly adjudicates all over the country, said she played the same role last year and could “definitely” attest to how the standard had improved across primary and high schools levels.

“The music selected by music teachers were excellent choices and this has highlighted the unique quality of each school that performed.

“I was also particularly impressed by the younger age groups. I mean I am a musician myself and I know how difficult it can be to hold a note on an instrument. And to see an eight-year-old do it with such conviction, is a highlight for me,” said Kierman.

The showcase concert will be held at the Clarendon High School Hall tonight at 6.30pm. Tickets are available at the door for R30. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
