Needs Camp man found dead in wheelbarrow

EAST London police are investigating murder following the discovery of the body of a 23-year-old Needs Camp man lying in a wheelbarrow at the gate of the local clinic.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said a 21-year-old suspect had already been arrested and was scheduled to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court this morning.

He said it appeared the dead man had been assaulted and killed by a group of people in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He said the man sustained two wounds, one to his head and one to his abdomen.

“It is being alleged that the deceased and his friends were attending a party in the area and on their way home they were assaulted.

“The friends ran to get help and the deceased was assaulted to death. At this stage it is unclear what type of weapon was used in the attack,” said Marais.

He said police rushed to the area and found the body of a man lying in a wheelbarrow at the gate of the clinic.

He said the investigation was continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at the East London police station.

Captain Marais said the accident happened about 4pm.

He said it was still unclear in which direction a Toyota Conquest and Ford Focus were heading at the time of the accident .

T wo people travelling in the Toyota were declared dead on the scene .

“Emergency services had to use the ‘jaws of life’ to free the deceased from the mangled wreck. Both the deceased were males aged between 30 and 40,” said Marais.

He said four passengers travelling in the Ford were taken to hospital in East London and were in a stable condition.

He said police were investigating a culpable homicide case.

l About 123 suspects were arrested for various crimes during police operations in East London over the weekend.

Captain Marais said the operations began on Friday night and ended yesterday morning.

He said there was a clear drop in drunken driving incidents for a fourth consecutive week with only four drivers arrested this weekend.

Marais said regular roadblocks and stop routines were bearing fruit. Police and BCM traffic police were arresting between 20 and 30 drunken drivers every weekend.

Marais said a further 119 suspects were arrested for crimes of shoplifting, housebreaking, theft, rape, assault and traffic offences.

They were booked at various police stations .

He said all suspects were scheduled to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court today. —
