Five new buses costing R9.5-million were added to the fleet of state-owned enterprise the Mayibuye Transport Corporation (MTC) on Monday.

The five buses will replace old unroadworthy vehicles, which will be scrapped.

Of the 69 buses owned by MTC, only 48 are fully operational. Some have been around for more than 17 years.

Department of transport spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca said the government had made a capital injection to ensure that commuters were afforded “safe, efficient, reliable and affordable public transport”.

MTC’s recently appointed chief executive Ntombizine Madyibi affirmed the company’s new vision of “becoming the public transporter of choice”.

“Mayibuye Transport Corporation will deliver better on its mandate of being a catalyst for socioeconomic growth and development in the province, by providing access to economic activity to commuters from the rural areas, transport them to hospitals; schools and to employment opportunities,” Madyibi said.

In a statement to the Daily Dispatch, MTC said the poor condition of roads on most of their routes further hampered service delivery and increased operating costs.

“With more than 2.2 million passengers transported, with just over 48 operating buses during the year, this additional fleet provides much needed relief.”

Engineering executive manager Zilindile Leni said: “These new technology vehicles will be maintained by a dynamic team of technicians who will undergo structured training with the operating equipment manufacturer.”

Board chairman Vanguard Mkosana in his address to the forum, said commuters could expect to see no less than 75 new buses added to the fleet within the next 12 months.

“We have developed a new five-year strategy, looking at servicing areas we have never serviced before. This is chasing the vision set by this organisation, of serving the people of this province in the most befitting manner,” he said. — mbalit@dispatch.co.za
