New music centre officially opens

Stirling High School has officially opened its new Stirling Music Centre and Auditorium.

The R7.6-million venue comprises six specially designed music rooms and a number of practice rooms, some equipped with pianos, as well as a 350-seat performance hall.

On Tuesday it was packed with parents and some past pupils and teachers, including Natalie Spargs, a former teacher hailed as being “instrumental” in the centre’s development.

Tasked with officially opening the centre was school governing body chair Margot Thompson, who said the new facility would go a long way to enhancing and developing pupils’ talents. “This is a magnificent home for teaching music. All the facilities are here and the music pupils are finally close to one another.

“It is a special feature and addition to the school,” said Thompson, adding that the facility needed to be treated with love and care.

She said the auditorium would serve the entire East London community and had already hosted the classical Chameleon Trio, Thandi Ntuli’s jazz sextet and French classical sax outfit Connection Quartet.

Deputy principal Alan Webster said the centre was in honour of past music pupils. “Some of them might feel like they have missed out on this opportunity, but we see this centre as a legacy – their legacy,” he added. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
