New twist to killing of singer Zahara’s brother and friend

MYSTERIOUS bloodstains and information from eye witnesses have led East London police to search for two people who may have been injured or killed in the shooting that left award-winning musician Zahara’s brother dead on Sunday.

The Afro-pop star’s younger brother Mbuyiseli “Nana” Mkutukana, 25, and his 35-year-old friend, Thanduxolo Zumani, were murdered on Sunday after they allegedly received a call to meet someone on the banks of nearby Buffalo River about 3km from Phumlani Village where they lived.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said they were allegedly killed by three gunmen who crossed the river from the Mdantsane side.

Only their cellphones were missing.

Tana said that according to information given from residents, another two as yet unidentified people were shot with Mkutukana and Zumani.

“We are still searching for the two unknown people,” he said.

“They could have been from Needs Camp. We are searching everywhere, even in hospitals, and also looking for the three suspects as we investigate these murder cases,” Tana said, adding that various cartridges were found on the scene.

When the Daily Dispatch visited the site of the killing on Sunday evening, the two bodies were still lying side by side with multiple bullet wounds to their heads and bodies.

Forensic officers had finished with their investigations and had identified bloodstains on the scene believed to belong to a person or people other than the deceased.

Speaking to the Dispatch yesterday Zahara said: “The death of my brother is tragic, we can’t accept it. We need the assailants to be arrested and answer for the pain they have caused us.”

Zumani’s father Milton Zumani said the incident had shocked the village as it happened in broad daylight.

“I was shocked when I heard that my son had died.

“I am even more worried because he was married – his wife will be destroyed by this. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za / asandan@dispatch.co.za
