Not one nod for BCM mayor ... while his deputy tops the ANC candidate list

Buffalo City Metro mayor Alfred Mtsi may have to relinquish his post after the local government elections if the ANC regional candidates’ list is anything to go by.

Mtsi’s name does not appear on the party’s 50 PR councillor candidate list, which is topped by his deputy and ANC regional chairman Xola Pakati.

The Daily Dispatch has learnt that Mtsi was not even among the 65 people nominated to the list.

A senior ANC leader told the Daily Dispatch yesterday that branches had made a clear statement when choosing names for the list.

“What is clear is that Pakati is leading the list.

“What was so glaring is that Mtsi never even appeared in the whole thing, even on the master list.

“This means that not even a single person in BCM nominated him.

“There is something there, whether it’s branches not supporting the decision of the province to bring Mtsi here or not – I don’t know what it means,” the source said, adding that the ANC in the region had always wanted Pakati as executive mayor.

Pakati’s deputy in the Dr WB Rubusana region and former council speaker Luleka Simon-Ndzele, who resigned from council last week, might make a comeback as deputy mayor after her name appeared at number two on the list.

Not everyone fared that well though, with former metro health and public safety portfolio chair Rufus Rwexu only receiving 11 votes from the 109 delegates in the conference.

ANC veteran Joe Jordan filled the last position with only three votes.

Jordan was part of a group of disgruntled ANC members in the region that embarked on several marches to the ANC regional and provincial offices.

The Dispatch has learnt that the disgruntled members will today hold a press conference responding to the list conference.

The list also reflects an “influx” of young members who have been vocal in ANC politics in the region.

These include the region’s treasurer Ncedo Kumbaca, ANCYL regional chairman Xolani Witbooi, Antonio Carels and the Youth Council’s Siya Momeni.

The region was only able to finalise the long-awaited PR councillors list in the early hours of yesterday morning after the conference was abruptly postponed on Tuesday.

Speaking to the Dispatch yesterday, Pakati said now that the list had been finalised party processes could move forward.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said that subsequent to the finalisation of the conferences the regions would submit their lists to the provincial list committee.

“The PLC will now look at all policy matters and consolidate a final report to the provincial executive committee, which is the final decision-making body.

“The PEC has a responsibility of 15% intervention on the list when it sees gaps – maybe there are principles that were not met or people that were left out who should have been included,” Mabuyane said.

Asked about Mtsi, Mabuyane said he would not dwell on individuals.

“I have not yet received the report you are referring to.

“Regions have a responsibility of making sure that ANC lists comply,” he said.
